Fishing Spring is a particularly spectacular spring with a great cave and a blue pool. The water is COLD but quite a few brave souls were reveling in plunging themselves, head and all, into it.
Highlights
- A beautiful spring with a cave on the Meramec River
- Crystal clear, cold spring water
- The cave goes back at least 40 feet. It got pretty tight at that point and I didn’t choose to explore any further. There might be quite a bit more.
Lowlights
- As far as I know, the only way to access this spring is to paddle to it on the Meramec River. I saw it as part of a 15-mile paddle from Scott’s Ford Access to Birds Nest Beach but there are shorter 6-mile floats that will go by it.
- Generally fairly crowded on weekends as several different outfitters serve this section of the river.
Getting There
It is about 3/4 of a mile West of where the Meramec crosses under Highway 19 (Just a mile NorthWest of Steeleville, MO). There are several outfitters that put boats out on this section of the Meramec including The Rafting Co. and Birds Nest Lodge.Links
